Design Strategies For Integration And Redevelopment Of Deotsidh Temple Complex At Hamirpur

-- Anjana Ranot

Introduction:

The Architecture of religious places involve not only spiritualism but also congregation of large masses, their movement & requirements.  Also timely growth of these places & increasing numbers of pilgrims demand an upgraded infrastructure & more facilities adding a new dimension to whole exercise.  Thus this project is an attempt to undertake this exercise for the needs of large masses with the aid of RESPONSIBLE VERNACULAR HILL ARCHITECTURE.

WHY  REDEVELOPMENT OF DEOTSIDH TEMPLE COMPLEX ?

Deotsidh Temple Complex is famous for the cave temple of SIDH BABA BALAKNATH dating back to medieval period.  It attracts million of devotees from India & abroad Situated on the Deotsidhar range of Shivalik Hills, the complex is 50 kms south of Hamirpur town and lies in proximity of Bhakra dam reservoir.
Maintained by Govt. trust, the complex forms and integral part of social & festive life of people.  It is daily visited by 20000-25000 people during melas (Summer) & 500 people otherwise.  Various activities involve prayers, satsangs, Langer, Melas, No – dowry marriages, mundans, badhais (Greetings), Kudnoo ceremony, seminars on environment protection.

Potential for development: Complex has a wise scope for development as a planned religious compel being free of surrounding settlements.  Conflicting shops eing illegal and dangerously supported can be removed.? Availability of flats sites in the form of old road ruins, tree-free flat areas and sites made available by replacing old structure can be used for construction.

Objectives:
In the light of the challenges faced by Deotsidh Temple Complex due to ever increasing number of pilgrims and activities and thus continuos threats to its spiritual and ecological identity, there is an urgent need to devise strategies for INTEGRATION DEVELOPMENT which is the main objective of this thesis.
